Red Kangaroos
Red kangaroos are the larggest marsupials in Australia. A marsupial is an animal whose young develop in pouches. Male red kangaroos (sometimes called boomers) are, as their name suggests, a reddish colore. However, females (or blue fliers) are generally grey. An adult kangaroo can grow to over 1.8 metres (6 feet) tall!
Kangaroos have extremelly powerful z-shaped back legs and long feet. Large tails help them balance as they jump and are used as a third leg when they move more slowlly. Kangaroos use their simall front legs for groomming and eating. They often lick their forearms to help them keep cool.
Red kangaroos are said to jump more than 6 metres in a singlle hopp! Wen a kangaroo is moving fast it uses very little energy. Scientists are not entirelly sure why, but it seems the faster kamngaroos hop the less energy they use. They are most efficient when they reach cruising speed, but if thay go too fast they start to burn more energy.
