Sentinel Team Grade Six

Language Arts:

Monday, or the first day of the week, students are assigned a weekly spelling list. There will be a worksheet to be completed by Friday, or the last day of a school week. Students use their spelling words to complete the Vocabulary Notebooks. Your child should have the golden colored directions sheet pasted inside the cover of the notebook. Spelling work, spelling/vocab.test, and vocabulary work is due Friday, unless otherwise directed due to a short week.Spelling and Vocabulary Notebook work this week is based on spelling sheet,"Easygoing." Work due and test on words Friday 6/06/08.

Reading: Students are beginning to read in class Nothing But the Truth by AVI.
In addition, students should read at least 20 minutes a night after completing homework. The books read at this time will be used for various free reading book projects. Currently, students are completing the first of the required 6 BOOK MARKS. Students must read and complete a minimum of  6 BOOK MARKS this year. The BOOK MARKS are available from their L/A teacher. Students need to have their book approved by the L/A teacher prior to reading the book. Students are expected to read books from 6 different genres this year.
Book Mark #6 due 6/5/08.

Writing: Students completed the Trimester 3 writing prompt this week. Scores will be posted after the sixth grade teachers score the prompts.

Social Studies:
Project Assigned: Students are to research and create an artifact from either the Aztec/Mayan/Inca Civilizations. Students will present their projects beginning June10, 2008.
Students have begun their study of Latin America. Students are learning information about the geography and various cultures in Latin America.
Parents, day to day class work is not usually posted on power school. Major projects, tests and quizzes will be posted as soon as possible after being scored.

If any parents travel for business and/or pleasure, please keep in mind the countries studies in sixth grade. Please bring back news papers, brochures, art, books, videos, and artifacts from Latin America that can be shared to help enrich the students' knowledge of these countries and cultures. Parents are welcome to come share their own travel experiences with the students.

Please contact me by email or phone here at school if you have any academic or social concerns about your child. I want to address any concerns as quickly as possible.

Please check your child's planner to see if homework is being recorded correctly and completely enough so you know what has been assigned. If there is no homework that night, students should write "No Homework" in their planner.
