Poetry of Africa

Africa
Crowned with the golden
Band of sand that is
The Sahara.
The Nile runs flowing
Up her side.
She is adorned with
Diamond beaches,
Gold mines,
Silver;
Yet scarred by the
Evil arrow of poverty.

Africa
The birthplace of humankind
With rivers that flow
Through its vast plateaus
So much land
With so much beauty
So many new things to be uncovered
Mount Kilimanjaro, the Zambezi River
Teaming with life
Savannas with black and white
Chased by yellow and orange
                                                                           Beautiful valleys and sights
                                                                           In Africa
Will the River Valley split?
Will the tsetse flies die out?
Will people learn to live with drought?
Malaria, yellow fever, AIDS,
Can Africa ever get the treatment
Or find the cure?
Overgrazing, poverty, locusts
Can people in Africa
Feed their families
Or themselves?
Without perseverance
And hope,
Where would Africa be?

Africa
Beautiful
Land of promise
Gold, cocoa, rubber
We need
Africa’s
Resources.
Tourism.
The pyramids
Are teeth.

The rivers,
The Nile
Are collections
Of its tears.
So many
Bad tears
And happy tears
Africa.

I am Africa
I am the Nile.
I am Kilimanjaro
I am the beautiful land
I am a mandatory merchant
I am the home
To tears bleeding with history
I am the Sahara
I am the trees
I am the animals
And the people.
I am the land
Of promise.

Africa, you are shaped like a skull
With a big, pointy nose
That dips into the Indian Ocean.
With a mouth that’s ready to swallow Madagascar.
Your chin is South Africa
And your ear is Nigeria.

I am Mt. Kilimanjaro
Nothing stands higher than I.
From my peak I can see
The many wonders of Africa.
The beauty and the splendor
Of the Great Rift Valley,
The Nile River, a great, swift snake,
Coursing through Egypt and Sudan,
Halting in the powerful Aswan Dam.
I behold the great, green, marvelous
Band of rainforest
And the grasslands are alive with animals.
I am the seer of them all.
